We offer three ways of bringing our unique poetry and translation curriculum to your school or organization: a residency program that places Poetry Inside Out instructors in classrooms working directly with students, a professional development program that offers teacher training to allow school staff to implement the Poetry Inside Out curriculum on their own, and poetry and translation workshops for cultural institutions.
Poetry Inside Out has taught more than 7,000 students from 3rd grade to high school in schools in the Bay Area, San Diego, Boston, and New York over the past ten years. We’re eager to help you bring this first-hand experience with the world’s great poetry to your school. For more information or to get started, email Poetry Inside Out at pio (at) catranslation.org.
Poetry Inside Out residencies bring trained instructors to classrooms to lead 16-lesson units. During a typical residency the instructor and students read, recite, and discuss great poems from around the world, work together to translate the poems, and then produce their own poetry inspired by the authors they study. Details can be modified to fit the particular needs of each class—including choice of type of poem, specific poets, countries, and languages.

Poetry Inside Out professional development provides classroom teachers and school staff with the training and instructional materials to allow them to implement the curriculum in their classrooms. The two-day workshop, taught by Poetry Inside Out staff, introduces major concepts, guides participants through the program as they engage in the same exercises they will teach their students, and offers criteria and suggestions for selecting additional poems.

We also offer customized Poetry Inside Out workshops for cultural institutions. These programs can be tailored to complement programs and exhibits within the institution. We have worked with museums and other cultural organizations around the Bay Area to enrich their exhibits.
